I am climbing Mt. Kilimanjaro this June for Child Legacy’s water well ministry in Malawi, Africa. An anonymous donor will give a 50% match, up to my goal, to the Pothawira medical clinic, also located in Malawi.
Thank you Friends and Family for being a body of amazing people that care for and serve others. We all have our interests and passions, and thankfully, our ‘time, talents and treasures’ all work together to make the world a better place.
I have been to Malawi (Africa) twice to serve as a Nurse in the Orphanage and Health Clinic of Pothawira, ‘Safe Haven’ (Pothawira.com). I have witnessed the seemingly insurmountable challenges of being born into the world’s poorest country. The Malawi people are humble, dignified, hard-working, family oriented, spiritual, and thankful despite the daily struggle to attain safe drinking water, food, and basic healthcare. The statistics are shocking: 25% of the children born in Malawi will die before the age of 25 and the average life span for those who survive is 43 years. Currently, there are 126 children in the Orphanage, and 36% of them have mothers who have died giving birth. When you see these innocent joyful children at play, it seems so unfair that they face such a daunting life due to the circumstances of their birth! When I return to the comforts of my life here in the USA, I remain determined to not leave these children as ‘memories’ but to fight for their future.
As part of that promise to the children, I am raising awareness and funds to complete a Birthing Center for the community. I will be climbing Mt Kilimanjaro alongside the amazing Dr Annie Alaniz, who co-founded Pothawira. We leave June 3 for a trek (Shira Route) to a peak of 19, 341 feet where the last days/nights will have Arctic temperatures. Without a doubt, this will be the most challenging physical and mental feat I have ever attempted, but it pales in comparison to the struggles of the Malawi people.
Our climbing team must raise $20,000 to make this Birthing Center a reality. Funds raised will also be used to repair water wells through the organization ChildLegacy.org. Clean accessible water saves lives!
I ask that you pray for these children and their future and others in Malawi that will benefit from the Birthing Center and water well initiatives. Please pray for our safety as we climb. Finally, I ask that, if you are able, please donate to our cause. Let’s get this Birthing Center up and running! I will also display a banner on the hike with your family name/business/honorarium/favorite bible verse for any donation over $1,000.00.
Please feel free to call or email with your questions, advice or encouragement!
