It’s finally going to happen! In November, I will be hiking to Base Camp of Mt. Everest. Woohoo! It’s not the peak elevation of 29,032 ft, but 17,700 ft will be an accomplishment for me just as well. Those of you who know me, know I am a determined woman who can’t resist a personal challenge. For those I haven’t had the pleasure of meeting, my name is Terry Perkins. I’ve worn many titles in my life, but those I treasure most are wife, mother, and teacher. When my birthday came and went in 2021, I was disheartened that I was unable to fulfill a bucket list item for my BIG 60th birthday. It’s funny how life works though. While talking with a personal trainer at my gym about his recent climb of Africa’s Kilimanjaro, I learned of an upcoming climb in 2022 to Everest in Nepal. Serendipity!
My trainer, Mike, introduced me to Clean Water Climb expeditions organized by the non-profit organization, Child Legacy International. The Clean Water Climb is their fundraising effort launched in 2011 to repair broken water wells in rural Malawi, one of the poorest nations in Africa. To date, the Clean Water Climb has provided funding to repair about 365 water wells per year benefitting 9.1 million Malawians. Did you know that 1 out of every 4 Malawian children dies before the age of five due to diseases attributed to unsafe drinking water? That’s one child every 15 seconds…so sad and preventable. As a retired educator, I have a special place in my heart for children no matter where they live and knew I had found a calling. I have this unique opportunity to take a peek at the “Holy Mother”, a nickname for the peak of Mt. Everest, and help provide clean water in Malawi.
I hope you will join me in in my fundraising efforts to sponsor repairs to wells in Malawi. Every dollar donated provides clean water for 1.5 Malawians for 5 years. One well can be repaired for $1250 benefitting ~2000 people in a village, and $5000 will bring clean water to four villages and schools. Water is essential to life. When you give to the Clean Water Climb fundraiser, you are giving to Child Legacy International, a 501 (c) (3) tax-exempt organization. I would be so thankful for your donations to this worthy cause. Any small amount is greatly appreciated. In the words of Benjamin Franklin, “Little strokes fell great oaks.” A little bit of faith and goodwill will go far. I will be paying 100% of my expenses for this wonderful travel opportunity, so that means every dollar donated goes directly to the mission of providing clean water to the people of Malawi.
